Market update

Yesterday Mulgrave Makers Market (26th June 2011) had moved indoors for the winter. I discovered very quickly I am a space hog. I love having room to move so so going from a 3mx3m marquee to a 2mx2m (ish) space that allowed one table and one chair and thats all was quite a shock to this old gal.
But with some creative thinking and not putting everything out all went well.
And of course the first market indoors and it didnt rain a drop all day. But at least I was nice and warm and dry and out of the wind.
Not the flashest set up, but I managed to get it all going on. lol

So long since I last posted

My friends I have been uber slack and not posted my goings on for months.
Have I been busy busy busy. Here's a recap.
Feburary was spent getting kids back into school and getting ready for Mulgrave Makers Market. Grant and I had fun as usual, it was soooo wet our tent reached saturation point and we sat in a fine mist.
March brought the news of a Debutante ball. So I began making an epic necklace for the very lovely Claire.
A lovely understated piece.
The March Makers Market saw my son Darcy attend with me for the first time. It was a load of fun.
April I was out for the count with bronchitis and shingles.
May brought with it the Makers Market with a change in our layout.

The making of the Debutante dress. And making a necklace for the mother of the Debutante, my best friend Mish.
followed by one for myself.

which brings us up to June... Winter.
New pics will be uploaded soon of all the new pieces available along with some very exciting news.
until then

Mourning/Respect Armbands

Not an easy topic to discuss. People's reactions to death and anything related can be so varied and sometimes fraught with emotional landmines.
My Best Friend, Mish, lost her father recently. Neither of us wear black or would even consider wearing black to the funeral, even though everyone else in her immediate and extended family did and would. Her Dad loved colour, Mish loves colour, so why would she not dress brightly for both of them? We talked about her families reactions to her not 'toning' it down for the funeral and I suggested we revert to an old and seldom used custom (except by footballers) of wearing a black armband to show our respect for not only her Dad but for the rest of the family and herself as well.
So I set about making an armband that was as beautiful as it was respectful.
I chose a heart for the centre of each one because the dearly departed now resides in your heart (in my opinion). The three larger hearts were lockets and I inserted a handwritten personal note for each of them. Mish and her two eldest children. For the younger three children, the hearts were solid making them more kiddy friendly and durable.
As it turned out the two younger girls did not have sleaves on their dresses and so I folded the armband over and made it a ribbon brooch which we then pinned to them.
What began as a guesture of love and respect between myself and Mish and for Mish towards her father, ended with more comments and requests for armbands. I was pleasantly surprised.
And so mourning bands have been added to my growing family of Something Quirky Friends.

Claire's Buttons

I made this bespoke piece for the daughter of my best friend.
Designed with her grace and beauty in mind.
Blossoming from girl to woman, this piece reflects her gentle nature and unique style.
I believe we are all blossoming from something to something more, so saying, everyone can wear Claire's Buttons, be bold, be adventurous, be graceful and gentle all at once.

Meet My Friends

I love brooches

they can be worn in so many ways. On your top as originally intended, on your hat, a scarf, on your handbag for a bit of original bling, hung on a chain or ribbon they can be worn as a necklace or bracelet. Slipped over a hair tie they make a great hair accessory. Let your imagination roam free and do something quirky.

Meet My Friends

This is Stack my Buttons.

I like the build up, the drama, the tension of this piece. To me it is a statement of being able to handle anything. It all hangs on two buttons, those two buttons are supported by all the others making them stronger as one than they would be alone. We are like that. We need others to help lift us up and support us, help us to be strong as we help them in turn to be strong.
From my heart to yours.
