Meet My Friends

I love brooches

they can be worn in so many ways. On your top as originally intended, on your hat, a scarf, on your handbag for a bit of original bling, hung on a chain or ribbon they can be worn as a necklace or bracelet. Slipped over a hair tie they make a great hair accessory. Let your imagination roam free and do something quirky.

Meet My Friends

This is Stack my Buttons.

I like the build up, the drama, the tension of this piece. To me it is a statement of being able to handle anything. It all hangs on two buttons, those two buttons are supported by all the others making them stronger as one than they would be alone. We are like that. We need others to help lift us up and support us, help us to be strong as we help them in turn to be strong.

Meet My Friends

Tangled Buttons, my newest friend, though just as dearly loved.

I have always loved that messy wire and bead style. I wanted one with buttons, so I taught myself to crochet with wire and I made it. I was in heaven, it was tricky but I made it. I learnt a new skill and got an awesome ‘just what I wanted’ necklace too. I love that each one is unique, the placement of buttons, the tension of stitch will never be the same again.

Meet My Friends

This is Twisted Zipper.

My best friend Mish was the inspiration for this piece. I love the way she wears bright colours and has her own stamp on fashion, neither following it or standing against it. Twisted Zipper reflects her finding her own path in life, accepting the twists and turns and following them through with a smile lighting her face.

Meet My Friends

This is my friend Hanging Buttons

It is not as wildy adventurous as Button Madness but more adventurous than a single pendant. It says
‘ I’m playing my cards close to my chest and I am ok with that. I know how to have fun, but I choose it carefully. I’m as out there as I want to be and I will not be influenced by anyone else.’
‘I like me.’

Meet My Friends

This delicate lady is Pretty Zippy.

I wanted to wear something seriously off beat and quirky but still be feminine and delicate too. This is the perfect blend. It is a statement of ladylike quirkiness. I love it. My little girl has several of these because she loves them too. Seems there is no age barrier to being pretty zippy.

Meet My Friends

May I introduce
Button Up Button Down.

I made this necklace for my best friend Mish, for no other reason than because I love her and wanted her to have something that reflected her quirky fun side. People stopped her to ask where she got it, pretty soon
 Something Quirky was born.
There’s a little quirky in all of us.

Button Madness

This is Button Madness, an explosion of colour, also delightful in a single colour. I wanted to express the random elements of life, neat order and spontaneous fun can co-exist side by side.
I believe every woman needs a necklace that shouts
‘I have depth and maturity, but most of all... I know how to have fun.’

Balance My Buttons

A treasured friend of mine.
I woke from a peaceful dream and knew I had to make it. I knew what it would look like and why. But no matter how I tried I could not get it to sit together, frustrated I explained my vision to my beloved husband Grant, together we talked it through, the end result was - he taught me to solder so I could make the frame. A new skill. A new design. A new balance.
‘Balance My Buttons’ reflects the balance in our lives. We juggle so many things it is easy to overload; we need a centre, a non moving part of us, to remind us of who we need to have some fun everyday to keep our buttons balanced.

From my heart to yours.

My first market... successful and educational

Yesterday I attended the Mulgrave Makers Market. My first official market. It was amazing. The Market is run in the grounds of the Body Shop head office in Mulgrave, supported by the Body Shop with the added benefit of encouraging and supporting Bizness Babes to launch their businesses. I will post about this awesome initiative a little bit later on.
The weather was cold and wet with enough patches of non rain to make it an excellent day, with plenty of friendly faces.
Grant and I had to be there between 6am and 7am am to set up I opted for us to get there bang on 6am giving us two hours to set ourselves up, we needed it, we weren't rushed, it was lovely.
Before I go any further. Thank you Thank you Thank you Grant. My husband is an amazing man, I could not have done it without him yesterday.

My goal for the market yesterday was to see how things went. What people liked, what they didn't like, what they wanted more of, how I liked the market scene, etc.
So my day was highly successful.
I sold some pieces, made some friends and contacts and learnt what people's expectations are at markets as well as how to intereact with more than one person at a time. I still need some work on this as I tend to be a fully focus on one person at a time sort of person. Nothing wrong with that but everyone is important.

Some of our fun adventures included our stands being blown over in the wind, repeatedy, we ended up using duct tape to hold them down (thank you Sue, Champion of all things Mulgrave Makers Market), trying to understand the complex conversational skills of 3 year olds wanting to blow bubbles. Bubbles being blown straight back at us. Encoraging everyone including the very senior citizens that they needed to blow bubbles and succeeding. Talking enthusiastically with other button collectors and lovers about the joys of running your fingers through containers of buttons and layering them in jars for decoration. Meeting all the amazing stall holders and seeing what creative minds they have. We had this fabulous woman on one side of us with felt terrarium kits. I adore terrariums but tend to kill plants so this is my idea of perfection. On our other side was an equally fabulous and creative woman with an array of dainty and retro cards, magnets, clothes and all manner of items.
The one thing I found really hard was actually parting with some of my pieces. But that is the point of selling them so I smiled and got over it.
Actually my first sale was very exciting. This very lovely lady couldn't decide between two pieces, she settled on one and as I was putting it in a bag for her she decided she would have the other piece too. Big Happy Face.
Below is our stall.
We will be at the next Market on Sunday the 19th of December. Come see me, and blow some bubbles with me while you are there.

Thank You Gail

Before I tell you all about how amazing my first market was yesterday, I want to tell you about a lovely woman who visited my stall.
Her name is Gail, we chatted about buttons and how many she had at home that she was about to give to the op shop or to her granddaughters school. She offered to share them with me. Of course I accepted her offer. Just now she knocked on my front door with a 2 litre ice cream container full of buttons. She told me how they came from her mothers house and from her own and from other places along the way. What a marvellous history in her hands. My heart swelled at the thought of taking these buttons, a simple collection from someone or in the case several someones life. The things these buttons have seen, the memories they have shared in.
Gail, from the bottom of my heart thank you, I love your buttons. I cant wait to see them come to new life an go on to see and share in many new memories.
